Muscazine Case Study

We were looking to develop a unique online system filled with features that would give a competitive edge in delivering news and alerts to a local audience.

Within a week we had the basic skeleton of this news system online. Site administrators were able to upload news stories on demand, update or delete them as necessary, and more. After that, we completed all the great features that would keep visitors coming.

Comments
In the modern age of the internet, readers like to be able to interact or give their input in some way. On a local news website such as this, it is typically done by allowing registered users to post comments on articles. We developed a complete, fully-functional user registration and login system, which included email verification, CAPTCHA spam prevention, and more.

Subscriptions
To allow this news website to stand out, we gave readers a way to get their local news as it happens - letting them have the edge of being some of the most informed people in the community. Registered users, which were created earlier for commenting, could subscribe to news alerts on an as-they-happen basis.

Pictures
Another advantage of this news website would be the pictures, lots of pictures. To implement this, we extended our Ruby on Rails program to include picture Galleries and Pictures, which were then tied to news articles. The competition used AJAX in this area, which was rather poorly implemented, not very functional, and allowed only one picture per article. This was a case in which we though AJAX was not as appropriate, and we had rails generate actual webpages to display images to the readers.

Overall
Overall, the entire system was completed in less than a month - and more features can still easily be added on-demand. Local audience reaction has been extremely positive, and the project was finished well under budget.
